Saruman Final by timshinn73 Saruman Final by timshinn73
This is the finished version of Christopher Lee as Saruman the traitor from The Lord Of The Rings. Pencil sketch with photoshop colors.

Although I like the version with no background, I feel it's important to put a figure in an environment.

Thanks to shelleyinez for helping finalize this version. Your comments are always honest and most helpful.

Thank you for taking a look and look for more LOTR pics soon.

This is a great caricature. I like because it is not just a deformed photo. It has your style, but the character is still recognizable. This is just how a caricature has to be. Very good.

Aaaah! What an awesome chariacture. And, of course, anything related to Saruman is an A+ in my book. ^_^

Okay, that's it! I'm gonna shoot my freaking internet server. I wrote this very detailed comment for this pic and it goes and closes the window on me! ARGH!

Well this picture deserves a comment, so I'll retype it. This picture is fantastic. You truly capture how Christopher Lee portrays Saruman in the film. I love the background too. It's not so flashy that it takes away from the main focus, that of which is Lee, but it has a beautiful tone and color that truly enhances the picture and truly completes it.

I wish I could draw Saruman like that. Everytime I try, Saruman ends up looking like something out of a political cartoon or I get Gandalf the White instead of Saruman the White!

Great Job, as always

A technical question if you don't mind.

You do the pencilwork on paper and scan it.

But then how do you put the colors underneath?
I mean, how do you separate the pencil strokes from their white paper background into a transparent layer?

I do hope you'll help me with that. It would help me...
blackzer0 Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2003
Wow, thanks for the link, it's a great help.

I use Darken for blending lineart... but it chews away at the line edges. Multiply is much better because it doesn't.

Of course Multiply turns any color into black... but that's no problem for us, since the lineart is black anyway :D

Thanks again.

The coloring is done on a seperate " multiply" layer in photoshop. There is a link in my journal to several different coloring tutorials. Give them a look. They should help. If not, note me and I'll see if I can explain it abit clearer. But the tuts at that link are excellent and should help you alot.

How can you do such wonderful pic??
Sorry, but I'm simple amazed by your style, really. Saruman, here, looks perfect.
More or less, it's idendical to the movie's Saruman... and then you put in your prtrait also his evil thoughts.
Wow, it looks so good! The exaggeration on the eyes and forehead make him look even more creepy and daemonic... o.o

You have a brilliant talent of capturing the essense of characters. The exageration of certain features. How they come so alive.
I particularly love how the background compliements with the foreground character. How it sort of illuminates.

Can't wait to see your finished Gandalf ;)
